Architectural engineering, which is also known as “building engineering”, is the field of engineering which is concerned with the process of designing and constructing buildings.
This main field of engineering is comprised of three major branches or specialties, and these specialties are as follows: Structural systems, MEP systems, and Construction. This article will familiarize the main aspects and concepts related to these three branches of architectural engineering.
(1) Structural Systems
A structural engineer is concerned with ensuring the stability and the strength of the building at hand. The individual structural engineers oversee how much weight a certain building must support, and the expected other forces the building might need to resist. Structural engineers are responsible for the design of the foundations, beams, trusses, floors, walls, and roofs. They also work in collaboration with other architects to ensure that all elements are coordinated together and considered within the building plan.
(2) MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) Systems
An MEP engineer oversees the planning, designing and implementing the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, which are more commonly known as the HVAC systems. In addition, MEP engineers are in charge of designing the fire, plumbing, electrical and lighting systems. These engineers also collaborate with other architects in order to ensure that all the aforementioned systems are implemented in the right way and are using energy efficiently.
A construction engineer is responsible for monitoring the process of the construction of a building, taking into consideration all the parameters determined by the structural engineer as well as the MEP engineer. Furthermore, a construction engineer is responsible for the safety and organization of the main aspects of construction in order to make sure that at the end of the process the building is built properly. Construction engineers may manage excavation, the delivery of materials and workers to the construction sites, as well as the organization of the heavy equipment that is used on the site.
